What to Expect from a Rapid HIV Test
The rapid HIV test only requires a small prick of your finger to screen for specific HIV antibodies. Results are either preliminary positive (reactive) or negative (non-reactive) and are provided in less than 30 minutes.
The rapid HIV tests that we use are more than 99% accurate. At UNM Truman Health Services, your results are kept strictly confidential.
When to Get Tested
HIV does not discriminate. The virus can infect any type of person in all stages of life – from young teens to elderly adults. If you have ongoing risk factors, getting tested once is not enough. Populations with the highest risk for HIV infection include:
- Adolescent and adult men who have sex with other men
- People who inject drugs
- Sex workers
- Anyone who has contracted an STI recently or currently has an STI
- Anyone who has had unprotected sex
If you are at a higher risk for contracting HIV, the CDC recommends you get tested for HIV at least annually.
Free testing is always available at our offices, located at 801 Encino Pl. NE, Suite B-6 in Albuquerque, NM. We also offer free testing on January 4th, 2016 throughout the Albuquerque community, contact us for the nearest testing location.
