Reasons to Keep Up with LGBTQ+ Entertainment

It’s a human phenomenon that we tend to express interest in what is already familiar. Unfortunately, that leaves a lot of life and experiences outside our “box.” Even if you are not a member of the LGBTQ+ community, there are a lot of great reasons why you should keep up with the goings-on in the LGBTQ+ entertainment world.

See Realistic Representations of LGBTQ+ Life

If you and no one you know is a member of the LGBTQ+ community, it’s likely that what you “know” about this community is really a bunch of stereotypes. Gender-normative depictions of LGBTQ+ individuals are often exaggerated or just plain wrong. You are more likely to get a realistic view of what members of the LGBTQ+ community look like, talk like, live like when these characters are informed and portrayed by LGBTQ+ actors and performers. (Spoiler alert: you may find that you really can’t “just tell” when someone is LGBTQ+ because they’re “just regular” people.)

Enrich Your Appreciation of Artistic Expression

There are some forms of art and entertainment that are exclusive to the LGBTQ+ community—like drag—and others that just tend to be more popular within the LGBTQ+ community—like burlesque. When you keep your thumb on the pulse of LGBTQ+ entertainment, you get exposure to new entertainment and art forms…and you might even find that you like them and begin to appreciate the creativity and acceptance of blurred sex and gender distinctions behind them.

Become a Member of a Supportive, Gender-Inclusive Community

Keeping up with LGBTQ+ entertainment can open your eyes to the experiences and challenges that come with living a life “outside” of society’s sexual and gender norms (and politics). Entertainment by, for and about LGBTQ+ individuals can help you see members of this community as real people, people who need friends and support just like anyone else…and that “people” can include you.

How Do I Catch up and Keep up?
