Psychiatric Consultations

At UNM Truman Health Services, your psychiatric care begins with a consultation. In this first session, your psychiatrist will be asking questions that relate to:

  • Heredity. Does your family have a history of behavior health issues?
  • Biology. Do you eat well? How are you managing your HIV?
  • Psychology. What are your current stressors? Are any feelings making it difficult to complete day-to-day tasks?
  • Social Life. What are the most important relationships? What culture do you identify with?

A complete psychiatric consultation may require multiple sessions. In this time period, you and your psychiatrists will get to know each other and a diagnosis can be made. You and your psychiatrist will determine a treatment plan and medication may prescribed.

After completing your psychiatric consultation and evaluation, UNM Truman Health Services can connect you with a regular behavior health therapist. You can even get your prescriptions filled through our mail-in pharmacy!
